The way Lolita has been twisted by patriarchal society, even described as вЂњthe greatest love story of our time,вЂќ is exactly what has happened to much of LanaвЂ™s music. In reality, by perpetuating this message, men are able to keep young girls in a place of submission. The ineffable influence of patriarchal culture suggests to young girls that the traumatic, often illegal relationships Lana sings of are desirable. LanaвЂ™s music often depicts men as controlling, abusive, but ultimately addictive. She sings about her experiences and often uses literary imagery to help convey them. I donвЂ™t believe that Lana should be vilified for popularising Lolita amongst teenage girls or romanticising abusive relationships. In reality, it was pedophilic and an abuse of power. For instance, I remember watching Pretty Little Liars aged 12, and seeing nothing wrong with the relationship between a 15 year old student and her teacher and actually rooting for them to be together. Intended to be a satirical take on the way destructive behaviours are glorified in the media, this seems to have gone over many listenersвЂ™ heads due to the fact that what Lana sings about is heavily glamourised in wider society. Another song floating around TikTok is the unreleased Boarding School, which features lyrics about drug-taking, pro-eating disorder mentalities and student-teacher relationships. Others arenвЂ™t so inconspicuous, leaving obvious traces of their lusting. The evidence is there - many videos of teenagers are littered with disturbing comments from anonymous accounts that are so obviously perverted men. The accessibility of certain videos through hashtags and TikTok sounds make teenage girls - who are simply enjoying a song and way of dress - vulnerable. A song intended to critique men that prey on underage girls has become the go-to sound for men to find young girls under. Songs such as Smarty include the lyrics вЂњbeat me and tell me that no one will love me/ better than you do,вЂќ and Put Me in a Movie, вЂњcome on you know you like little girls.вЂќ The latter has been surfacing on TikTok over the past few months, often accompanied by videos of teenage girls lip-syncing, or video edits that include clips from Lolita and schoolgirl inspired outfits. Yet her repeated use of such imagery, seductively singing about trashy motels and making out in empty car parks turns once seedy locations into places of adventure and romance. She constantly references trailer parks, heavy metal lovers and hanging out in gas stations, placing an emphasis on the less glamorous parts of life. LanaвЂ™s early work, recorded under names such as May Jailer and Lizzy Grant showcase her вЂlive fast, die youngвЂ™ mentality most prevalently. There is an argument to be had on whether LanaвЂ™s use of such imagery contributes to the issues she often tries to criticise in the first place. The nature of our patriarchal society has shaped the way LanaвЂ™s music is consumed and interpreted, especially for young girls. Little did I know how much influence she would come to have over not only myself, but a legion of other teenage girls. Her unreleased song Driving in Cars with Boys sums this up perfectly: вЂI was born to live fast die young/ leave a beautiful corpse, live my life on the run.вЂ™ She created a new kind of American dream - not FitzgeraldвЂ™s America of financial prosperity and high society - but one of chaos, heartbreak, living fast and dying young. Born to Die, and the follow up EP Paradise, conceptualised a world of glamour, desire, and catastrophe - rich with vivid imagery referencing Lolita, A Streetcar Named Desire, and WhitmanвЂ™s poetry. Upon further investigation into her music, I decided I wanted to be a femme fatale, beautifully tragic, on the run with a mysterious man who was so desperately in love with me. For a girl from a small town in the middle of nowhere, Lana encapsulated a world I could only dream of. At this point in my life, I had never even tasted a sip of alcohol, yet I found myself wanting to get high by the beach with Lana, shoot down the paparazzi and dramatically fall onto a bed draped in beautiful blue fabrics. I was hooked from that moment, immersing myself in a world I felt so far away from. вЂAnyone can start again/ Not through love but through revengeвЂ™ anyone? I was enamoured by her pale blue outfit that so elegantly carried her through a minimalistic beach house, her angelic vocals, and the lyrics especially.
